In a world where we want everything and lots of it, it is common to hear the phrase, “Less is better.” I believe that for most things but I must admit I bend that rules a little when it comes to my horses. I love them and I want to buy them lots of goodies. Now I know the things I buy are not really for them, they are more for me because it makes me feel good to buy things like bridles and new pads! It is always so much fun to say I bought my horse a new bridle or halter. The funniest part about it is that my horse doesn’t want any of that stuff. He just wants food and water and shelter. He wants to feel safe and secure.
There is something so satisfying about buying new tack and putting it on your horse. In the winter time one of everyone’s favorite things to do is buy new horse blankets. They come in so many different colors and styles and we would all love to say we want one of each please! Yes we all have our passion and if you are horse crazy then it can turn into a very expensive passion.
I feel so blessed to be able to have horses and have them right in my back yard. It is tempting though when you keep horses on your own property to start collecting them. It is one thing to buy a new bridle or halter but when you come home with another horse it can really add up fast. I am lucky that I have a husband that keeps me on the straight and narrow and keeps me grounded.
There was only one time in all the years that we have been married that I came home with a pony without ever telling him. I figured I couldn’t get hold of him because he was on a hunting trip so I had to make a quick decision. Needless to say he was in shock when he got home.
I am not as much of a collector as I used to be because I know we can’t afford it and I am okay with that. I am completely content with the horses we have and I get to enjoy other people’s horses at our barn. But I will tell you that it is still fun to dream and if I could, I would want one of each breed please!
What a joy it is to be around these beautiful animals and enjoy each one every day. What a gift from God. I know less is better but it sure is fun to dream about more with horses!
Psalm 28:7 NIV
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song.
